Double Ninth Festival, Elderly Respect Online Activities

On Wednesday, October 21st, from 2:00-3:00 pm, WCCA held an online seminar to chat with the elderly on the Double Ninth Festival, the topics covered are how to make Chongyang cakes from the elderly and etc.







The "Chongyang Festival" on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month is a traditional Chinese day to show respect and love to the elderly. Respecting the elderly is the traditional virtue of our nation.













Teacher Chen Zhihong, a psychologist from the WCCA Health Committee, talked about the prevention of COVID-19: things that the elderly need to pay extra attention due to the new epidemic.








She answered the questions of the participants: Under what circumstances can the nucleic acid amplification testing be done? How to make an appointment by phone or online for those with symptoms and who are in close contact with the confirmed persons.







Su Xiaoting made a PPT about the Double Ninth Festival. Topics included the source, customs, poems. WCCA will keep this PPT to the youth club for future reference.







Teacher Wang Hongyin presented everyone on how to make Chongyang Cake.
There are many types of Chongyang Cakes, with different tastes from north to south. Mr. Wang makes the southern flavors.







Here is her recipe: 120g red beans, 300g glutinous rice flour, 30g sticky rice flour, 60g sugar, 250ml milk.
Soak the red beans one day in advance, add 30g sugar to the cooked, mix well and set aside. Add the glutinous rice flour to the sticky rice flour and slowly add the milk and stir evenly, then add the red beans, mix thoroughly to form a dough, spread the dough on the glass plate with greased paper. Put it in a large pot and steam it over water. After the water is boiled for 30 minutes, let it cool and cut into small pieces before serving.







Before the Double Ninth Festival, Waterloo Region Chinese Canadian Association dispatched Chongyang cakes, snacks and appreciation letters to the elderly member above 80 of the Red Maple Leaf Club.




















WCCA sent out a total of 30 Double Ninth Festival appreciation packages. The elderly who received the package showed very happy smiles. The gifts are light and affectionate. Together WCCA brought a warmer winter and a better life!
