Senior Access Government Information (SAGI) is an initiative under the New Horizon Senior Program funding, designed to help seniors to overcome various barriers such as technology and language in order to have equal access to information provided by the Canadian government.
Project Summary- In 2016 Chinese became the most common language spoken at home after English in Waterloo Region (WR), rising from the ninth in 2011. This indicates the rapid growth of Chinese newcomers in WR.
- Due to language barrier, many Chinese in WR have trouble accessing important information provided by the local government online.
- This project aims to improve access to important government information and services through language support and coaching in a friendly social environment. We target the local Chinese community with a focus on staying-at-home seniors, women, and newcomers.
project objectives: - To improve project target’s access to government information and services of healthcare, and emergency preparation & response in WR through language support and coaching ina friendly social group environment.
- To improve project subjects’ skills, interest, and participation in the online project and routine activities for the continuation of social participation and supporting inclusion.
Project Targets- Every Chinese in our community are welcome to participate. However, our primary targets are seniors, especially those staying-at-home women with language barriers and newcomers.
