Flavoured tobacco aimed at youth worries experts, educators
WATERLOO REGION — After years of steady decline, the tobacco industry is looking for a comeback with new spin on an old vice.
The youth market, despite awareness programs, education, taxes and the social stigma, has become a targeted consumer group with new tobacco flavours and varieties.
Stephen Manske, a University of Waterloo scientist at the Propel Centre for Population Health Impact and school of public health and health systems explained, "Overall tobacco use is continuing to decline … but our concern is that it's hitting a bottoming out point, so those products (such as cigarillos and e-cigarettes) are undermining progress."
